Understanding Harmonica Tab Notation

by Harmonica Hero Team

Harmonica tablature (tabs) is a simple notation system that tells you which holes to play and how to play them. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to refine your skills, understanding tab notation is essential for playing songs on the harmonica.

Basic Notation

Numbers: Hole Positions

Numbers represent the hole positions on your harmonica. A standard diatonic harmonica has 10 holes, numbered 1 through 10 from left to right.

Example: 4 means play hole number 4

Blow and Draw

The most fundamental distinction in harmonica playing is between blowing (exhaling) and drawing (inhaling) air through the holes.

  • Blow (Exhale): Plain number like 4
  • Draw (Inhale): Number with minus sign like -4

Bending Notation

Bending is a technique that lowers the pitch of a note by changing the shape of your mouth and throat. Bends are indicated by apostrophes (') after the hole number.

Draw Bends

  • -3' — Half-step bend (1 semitone lower)
  • -3'' — Whole-step bend (2 semitones lower)
  • -3''' — Three-semitone bend (3 semitones lower)

The more apostrophes, the deeper the bend. Draw bends are most commonly used on holes 1-6.

Blow Bends

Blow bends work the same way but are typically found on holes 7-10. They're notated the same way:

  • 8' — Half-step blow bend
  • 9' — Half-step blow bend
  • 10' — Half-step blow bend

Timing and Duration

Long Notes

When a note should be held longer than usual, it's indicated by a multiplier:

4. or 4 (2x) — Hold the note twice as long

In Harmonica Hero, you'll see visual indicators showing how long to sustain each note.

Pauses and Rests

Spaces in tab notation indicate timing pauses between notes:

4 -4 5 — Play hole 4 blow, then 4 draw, then 5 blow with brief pauses between

4 -4 5 — Wider spaces indicate longer pauses

Chords

Chords are multiple notes played simultaneously. They're written as numbers together without spaces:

  • 123 — Play holes 1, 2, and 3 together (blow)
  • -123 — Play holes 1, 2, and 3 together (draw)
  • 456 — Play holes 4, 5, and 6 together (blow)

Chords add richness and depth to your playing, especially in blues and folk music.

Practice Tips

  • Start Simple: Begin with blow and draw notes before attempting bends
  • Use Harmonica Hero: The visual feedback helps you see exactly when to play each note
  • Master Bending: Bending takes practice—don't get discouraged if it doesn't work immediately
  • Listen Carefully: Pay attention to the pitch changes as you bend notes
  • Practice Timing: Use a metronome or play along with songs to develop your rhythm

Using Tabs in Harmonica Hero

Harmonica Hero makes reading tabs even easier with its visual interface. As you play:

  • Notes scroll toward you in real-time
